Staff

Maryjka Mychajlowycz – Forest Watch   (email)
Before Maryjka found her calling as an environmental activist, she worked in archaeology and zooarchaeology. Maryjka joined FOCS in 1991, first as a volunteer, then as office manager, and since 1994 as Forest Watcher. She monitors logging in Clayoquot Sound and does her best to decrease it. When Maryjka isn't challenging the forces of industrial logging, she likes to garden, explore the outdoors, dance, and eat chocolate.

Dan Lewis – Executive Director   (email)
Dan is a sea kayak instructor, writer, and rainforest activist. A kayak circumnavigation of Vancouver Island in 1990 led Dan to realize just how little wilderness was left. He began campaigning with FOCS, helping to lay the groundwork for what became the mass protests of 1993. Since then he has continued to work for rainforest protection, even visiting Japan four times on behalf of FOCS. On board at FOCS since April 2010, Dan's mission is to get people out onto the ground to see what's really going on in Clayoquot Sound.

Bonny Glambeck – Forest Watch   email
Bonny has been sea kayaking since 1989, commuting year-round to her island home. She is a professional guide and instructor, leading trips in Barkley and Clayoquot Sound. Twenty years living in Clayoquot has made her an accomplished birder, botanist and naturalist. Bonny has been part of the rainforest movement since 1988. She was arrested in logging protests at Sulphur Pass, and devoted the next five years of her life to building the movement to save Clayoquot Sound. Bonny came on board with FOCS in September 2010.

greg blanchette – Office coordinator   email
Greg stepped in as office guy in April 2010. An émigré to Tofino from Ucluelet, where he lived for 10 years, greg brings an engineering and newspaper background to FOCS. He has long experience with nonprofits and community involvement, and calls working at the Friends a "dream job." He deeply feels that Clayoquot Sound has been, and must continue to be, an example to the world of stewardship and the irreplaceable value of ever-dwindling wilderness.

Megan Marshall – 2011 summer student (now returned to school)   email
Megan (traditional name Tl’ehskwiisimka) is a recent high-school graduate who will be studying biology and political science this September. As an Ahousaht band member and a former Ucluelet resident, Megan is familiar with the beauty of Clayoquot Sound. She has put in countless volunteer hours with organizations such as the Sierra Club of BC and the Wilderness Committee, and was a devoted member of her high school’s environmental club. Megan brings youthful enthusiasm and a First Nations perspective to the office this summer.
