Ursus River - Photo by Adrian Dorst
The mighty Ursus River Valley is one of the largest unprotected watersheds in the Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Reserve. Spanning 7380 hectares, this lush valley was awarded "eehmiis" status by Iisaak Forest Resources and the Central Region First Nations in 1999. An eehmiis area is considered to be "very, very precious" to the native people of Clayoquot Sound and is therefore off-limits to logging by Iisaak.
The Bulson is adjacent to the Ursus and is similarly large at 7210 hectares. Few people have ever visited these hard-to-reach valleys since the terrain is very rugged. This natural barrier to human encroachment has allowed the natural cycles of the Salmon Forest to continue relatively undisturbed for millennia in the Ursus and Bulson, where bears and cougars exist never having seen a human being. Friends of Clayoquot Sound work to establish permanent protection for these and other intact valleys, and to bring conservation benefits to local communities.
